At Ljubljana Airport, the arrival of the new Eurowings carrier and the first flight from Düsseldorf to Ljubljana was welcomed with a water salute and a symbolic event for passengers, media, and other stakeholders. The aircraft was greeted upon landing by Dr. Babett Stapel, Managing Director of Fraport Slovenia, Tomaž Pečnik, Acting Director General of the Directorate for Aviation and Maritime Transport at the Ministry of Infrastructure of the Republic of Slovenia, and representatives of Eurowings: Kevin Berisha, Airport & Network Relations, Ioannis Adamidis, Area Manager for Slovenija, Pavlos Petsalakis, Senior Area Manager International, and Louis Murselovic, Senior Expert Contracting & Economics.
Flights from Ljubljana to Düsseldorf and vice versa will be available three times a week—on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays—during the summer flight schedule, which lasts until the end of October. The airline will operate these flights using Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft, with the flight to Düsseldorf taking approximately one hour and 40 minutes.
Dr. Babett Stapel, Managing Director of Fraport Slovenija, commented on the launch of the new route: "We are excited to welcome Eurowings as a new carrier, offering passengers a regular air route between Ljubljana and Düsseldorf. An important addition to our network, also thanks to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Slovenia’s state incentives as part of the Public Call for Improved Air Connectivity. We believe this new destination will attract both business and leisure travelers, who, in addition to visiting the vibrant German city, will also have the opportunity to continue their journey to numerous appealing destinations within the extensive Eurowings network. At the same time, it is always our pleasure to welcome foreign visitors, who will have the chance to explore the diverse beauties of Slovenia."
The connection is supported by the Slovenia’s state incentives as part of the Public Call for Improved Air Connectivity, one of the first measures to enhance Slovenia’s flight network. Thanks to these incentives, Ljubljana Airport has already gained additional routes, including Luxair flights to Luxembourg, airBaltic flights to Riga, and Norwegian flights to Copenhagen. Tomaž Pečnik, Acting Director General of the Directorate for Aviation and Maritime Transport at the Ministry of Infrastructure of the Republic of Slovenia highlighted: “Establishing the Düsseldorf-Ljubljana-Düsseldorf air connection is the result of the sixth public call for subsidizing airport fees at Ljubljana Airport. The Ministry of Infrastructure conducted the call last autumn as one of the important measures to improve Slovenia's air connectivity, which is increasingly strengthening. Thus, in 2022, a total of 977,316 passengers were recorded, while last year in 2024 already 1.44 million, which is almost 50% more. In 2022, passengers could fly to 20 destinations, while this year passengers can fly to 26 destinations from Ljubljana Airport.”
Düsseldorf is an important destination for many business travelers as well as a city with a rich tourist offer. It attracts visitors with its picturesque old town, numerous top-tier museums and galleries, and the scenic Rhine promenade. Reinald Frankewitz, Head of Airport and Network Relations of Eurowings, said: “Another route for Eurowings, another connection for Europe: With the new flight from Düsseldorf to Ljubljana, we are expanding our network to include another important business and leisure route. We are convinced that passengers from both locations will be delighted with this new route. Travellers from Slovenia in particular will benefit from the 110 destinations they can reach from Düsseldorf.”
The summer season of 2025 at Ljubljana Airport is set to be a record-breaking in terms of carriers. A total of 24 airlines will operate flights to 26 destinations. In addition to the German value airline Eurowings, another newcomer is the Dutch airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. More than 170 scheduled flights per week will be available. The offer of many charter flights is also expected, with travelers able to fly to 52 holiday destinations.
