Successful renewal of our environmental certification within ACA

Zg. Brnik, 26. 7. 2019 -  Fraport Slovenija manages its environmental burdens with great responsibility. Our environmental policy incorporates commitments and strategic objectives on many areas which affect the environment, among those also being the reduction of CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gas emissions. We manage our carbon footprint within the Airport Carbon Accreditation, a programme empowering the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions. We have managed to reduce our emissions again and have thus successfully renewed our Level 2 »Reduction« accreditation. By 2025 we aim to transition to a low-carbon society.

Within the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, run by Airports Council International Europe (ACI EUROPE),  Fraport Slovenija has renewed its Level 2 »Reduction« accreditation in July 2019. Taking passenger numbers and cargo tonnage into account, CO2 emissions per individual passenger and per 100 kg of cargo in 2018 were down 14.5% and 17.2% respectively on the 2015–2017 average. Compared to the average of the last three years (2015-2017), the absolute level of CO2 emissions was increased by 2.2%, as a consequence of reporting about new emissions of glycol, which is used in the process of aircraft deicing (without glycol emissions the CO2 amount would have been reduced by 0.7%).

The carbon footprint calculation for 2018 has shown that among the individual emission sources the greatest contribution to carbon footprint present own use of electricity (61,4%), heating (18,9%) and company’s vehicles (16,6%), followed by emissions caused by de-icing chemicals (2,8%), generators (0,2%) and firefighting training (0,1%). According to these contributions to total amount of the CO2 from other emissions sources are following: stationary sources (19,2%), purchased electricity (61,4%) and mobile sources (16,6%) and other sources (2,8%).

Fraport Slovenija joined the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme in 2013 and since then we have managed to reduce our absolute carbon footprint by 865 tons of CO2 (25%) altogether. We have even been more successful looking at the relative indicators (taking passenger numbers and cargo tonnage into account), compared to CO2 amounts in 2012 we managed to reduce both indicators by more than 90% (1.7 kg of CO2 per passenger and 1.2 kg of CO2 per 100 kg of cargo).

Apart from managing with its carbon footprint, the company is acting responsibly to the environment on numerous other areas: encouraging efficient consumption of energy, water and paper, taking measures to prevent pollution and introducing best practices from the field of waste management, preserving biodiversity and natural values, reducing pollution and soil degradation and taking measures to reduce aviation noise and noise from other sources.
